General Information

FLU SHOTS
Flu Vaccine is now available to all students at the Health Center. Students wishing to receive their flu vaccine should come to the Health Center, located on the Simmons Residence Campus, Monday – Friday between 9:00 AM and 4:00 PM. If you are a student in the high-risk category (see criteria below) we urge you to come into the Health Center now to receive your vaccine. The vaccine is offered free of charge to all Simmons students. If you have any questions about your high-risk status or about the vaccine in general, please feel free to call the Health Center at (617) 521-1002 and ask to speak to one of the clinic nurses.

An annual flu shot is recommended for:
· Everyone 50 years of age or older
· Residents of long-term care facilities housing persons with chronic medical conditions
· Anyone who has a long term health problem with: asthma; heart disease; lung disease; kidney disease; metabolic disease, such as diabetes; anemia, and other blood disorders
· Anyone with a weakened immune system due to: HIV/AIDS or another disease that affects the immune system, long term treatments with drugs such as steroids, cancer treatment with x-rays or drugs
· Anyone 6 months to 18 years of age on long-term aspirin treatment (who could develop Reye Syndrome if they catch influenza)
· Pregnant women who will be past the 3rd month of pregnancy during the flu season (usually November-March, but past March in some years).
· Physicians, nurses, family members, or anyone else coming in close contact with people at risk of serious influenza
· It is encouraged for anyone who wants to reduce their chance of catching the flu.

OPERATIONS UPDATES
We had another bike stolen on Monday around 6pm. The bike rack has now been moved across the street from the Mockler doors into the patio area of 407, (1st black door). Students can sign a bike key out with either Chris or Paula in the MBA office in case the gate should be locked when you need your bike! We have never had two bikes stolen within a few weeks of each other in the 5 years I have been here and we are hopeful this will stop any future thefts.

NOTE FROM MARY D
A couple of weeks ago, I put a reminder notice about class norms in the MBA Update. In particular, cell phones going off in class remains a problem and we ask all students to shut their phones off, or put them on silent mode so that it does not disrupt the faculty member or your fellow students. We are aware that many of you need to have them with you, but please remember to shut them off or silent mode them before class starts. Thanks!

New Flags have arrived at the SOM!
The flags of Latvia, Ghana, Albania, Estonia and the Netherlands have arrived. Look for them in caseroom 5 toward the end of the month.

STUDENT BUSINESS CARDS
The SOM Marketing Department is currently taking orders for Simmons MBA business cards. If you are interested in ordering a box(s) of business cards with your name/class year and the Simmons logo, please contact Paula Donaldson in the MBA Office at paula.donaldson@simmons.edu by TOMORROW 10/17/03. Please note that we can not quote a price or delivery date at this time as it will depend on the volume ordered.

Financial Aid Information

FINANCIAL AID UPDATES
Students are reminded that for the purposes of your financial aid, that the academic year begins with the summer term. All students, including students in the one-year track, will need to reapply for aid during the upcoming spring semester for the Summer term (which is a new academic year. Dividing your courses over 2 different academic years for the one-year track is a benefit for you financially. By borrowing over two academic years, you have increased your federal loan eligibility and reduced your necessity to seek outside loan assistance. You will be able to finance your entire summer term costs through federal programs, eliminating your need borrow through alternative loan programs, which saves you money over the term of your loan repayment. Federal educational loans currently carry the lowest interest rate ever, 2.82% while in school and 3.42% in repayment. Federal loans also have interest rates that are capped at 8.25%.

SPEAKER AND BOOK SIGNING
Join Simmons School of Management and Women's Business as we present Gail Evans, author and former CNN's first female vice president, on Wednesday, October 22, 2003 at Simmons College. Gail's first book, Play Like a Man, Win like a Woman showed women how to get ahead in the workplace by learning the unwritten rules of business that men "wrote" and play by. She will be talking mainly about findings from her most recent book, She Wins, You Win, The Most Important Rule Every Businesswomen Needs to Know. In it, she takes her empowering approach to corporate success a step further by telling women that it isn't enough to understand men's rules--women must create their own.



The program starts at 5:00 pm followed by a book signing and reception. Student Clubs

Student Clubs at the SOM are run by and organized by SOM students. The MBA Office Staff assists with the transition from one year to the next by gathering names of interested students and by setting up each club in WebCT. Once we put you in touch with each other, you are off and running! If you are interested in participating or learning more about any of the clubs described below, please send an email to the contact person listed. If Paula is listed as the contact person, it means that the club's student leadership is in transition.

Ethics Club
The mission of the Ethics Club is to serve as a learning resource to Simmons MBA students for a wide range of business ethics issues. The club will examine how ethical decisions impact business successes or failures. Areas of interest include sustainability, economic, social and environmental concerns; corporate accountability; ethical decision making; socially responsible investing; and social enterprise. The assumption is that ethical issues are complex business dilemmas for which better decisions can be found through ongoing discussion. Club resources can be found on the Clubs WebCT. Project Management Club
It has been said that you lead people and manage projects... while that's an ongoing OB debate, take a step toward understanding project management and share your experiences with others by participating in a student group dedicated to Project Management. Please join me in welcoming Linda Schuller Wolf, GSLIS '01, your new SOM librarian. Linda brings an interesting and varied career to her SOM position, having worked as a research analyst for an Internet healthcare information company and in fundraising management for large institutions in the Boston area. Linda has a BS in English from SUNY-Buffalo, and has most recently held positions at the Belmont Public Library as well as Babson College's Horn Library. Linda is excited to have the opportunity to work with you, and we are delighted to welcome her back to the Simmons community as a colleague! Best wishes Linda!

All of the class tapes are stored in the Computer Lab. We now have a do-it-yourself method of getting copies of these tapes. Instructions are posted on how to make copies and lab assistants can help you with any questions you may have. You can bring your own tapes or copy to our used tapes free of charge. PRINTING
Please note that PDF files and other documents that contain graphics or are memory hungry take longer to print than your common Word document. We have also noticed that some PDF's cannot print successfully in WebCT. If you experience this issue, try emailing the PDF file to yourself and then try printing from your webmail account. Also, printing from the color ink-jet printer takes longer than the laser-jet. Please be patient and refrain from sending multiple print jobs of the same document to the printer.

SOM in the News

Evangelina Holvino, CGO Director and Senior Research Faculty, appeared in the September issue of Latina Style Magazine as a member of the Madrinas Network, a networking group of Latina professional women created at the July Working Mother Media’s Women of Color National Conference.

 The ground-breaking Teen Girls on Business Study continues to receive media attention in major newspapers, magazines, and web sites nationwide. The study, a collaboration between the Simmons School of Management and The Committee of 200 (C200), examined the key factors affecting girls' attitudes to their careers and their perceptions of business, and how these attitudes and perceptions differ from those of boys as well as across girls of diverse racial/ethnic groups. Most recently the Teen Girls of Business Study has received coverage in the July 30 Chicago Tribune article “Pioneering executives eye coming generations,” and the September 29 Fortune Magazine article “Most Powerful Women in Business.”

Stacy Blake-Beard, Ph.D., SOM Professor and Research Faculty at the Center for Gender in Organizations, was quoted in the Career Journal section of the August 19 Wall Street Journal Europe. In the article featuring mentoring strategies, Blake-Beard stresses the importance of showing a commitment on the part of the recipient to the mentoring relationship by following through with suggested advice.

Susan Sampson, SOM Assistant Professor and Director of the Prince Program in Retail Management, was quoted in the September issue of Money Magazine. In the article “Spend Smart,” Sampson commented that General Motors is hoping its new 24-hour test drive program would lead to consumers purchasing vehicles without price negotiations, once they’ve experienced the product.

Jill Kickul, Elizabeth J. McCandless Professor of Entrepreneurship, presented a recent report on women entrepreneurs at the Annual Celebration of New Hampshire Women Business Owners on September 29th in Manchester, NH. The purpose of this study is to inform a discussion in New Hampshire about how more women of all economic means can be encouraged and supported in entrepreneurial endeavors.
