Alumnae Board Recruiting Student Representatives
Apply by November 15, 2004

The Simmons School of Management Alumnae Association (SOMAA) Board of Directors is looking for two students (one full time, one part time) from the Class of 2005 to sit on the Board as non-voting members representing the interests of current students, our pre-alumnae constituents.

The SOMAA Board is the leadership of the Alumnae Association. Our mission is to serve alumnae and to support and advance the SOM. We focus on strategic issues that are important to furthering the interests of both groups including: Network Magazine, fundraising, accreditation, career services, marketing executive education, etc.
Your time commitment includes agreeing to attend all board meetings, held quarterly at the school, as well as monthly conference calls in the off months. Additionally you will be asked to work on a special committee or work on a special project.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain experience working on a board, become involved and connected with the alumnae network, and have some say in the direction of the Alumnae Association.

If you are interested, please contact Wendy Sheehan at wendy.Sheehan@comcast.net by November 15, 2004. Please include a resume and statement of interest. A nominations committee will contact you directly.

Executive Education is seeking part-time help
The SOM's Executive Education team is seeking part-time help, about 5-10 hours per week (flexible schedule, excluding Mondays). We are looking for someone to help with a variety of tasks, to help us prepare for upcoming programs. Tasks could include: proofreading, typing evaluations, data entry, and help with binder construction. We would love to talk to you - please email: andrea.cole@simmons.edu or call 617-521-3834 by Wednesday, 10/21, if interested.

Simmons College, 300 the Fenway, East Wing, 1st Floor of the Advancement Hall

The Office of Development and Alumnae Relations (ODAR) is seeking volunteers for our Fall Telethon. Telethons are an important component of achieving our Annual Fund goal, and also provide a great opportunity for students to meet and network with SOM alumnae who also volunteer for the telethon. Your participation is essential if we are to acheive our goal. Note that no experience is necessary – we will train and have fun while we're doing it! Please join us to help the SOM reach its goals for 2005. This year's priorities include: the Entrepreneurship and Diversity Initiatives, the Corporate Outreach Initiative, Leadership and Accountability, and the Center for Gender in Organizations. We provide delicious refreshments, good spirit, and great prizes to our volunteer callers. So check your calendars and contact Corinne Sirianos at 617.521.3825 or corinne.sirianos@simmons.edu to sign up. SOM in the News

The School of Management’s Center for Gender in Organizations has received a one-year grant of $80,000 from The Ford Foundation. The grant to continue CGO’s research, publishing, and consulting work on diversity will allow the organization to translate concepts and skills on working across differences into concrete skills and guidelines to strengthen diversity efforts within organizations. CGO Faculty Affiliate and SOM Associate Professor Dr. Stacy Blake-Beard will lead the project, with the support of other CGO faculty affiliates.

On September 27th, Acting Dean Deborah Merrill-Sands gave the keynote presentation launching Northern Trust’s new Women in Leadership Forum. Her talk, entitled “Gender Dynamics in the Workplace: Implications for Women and Leadership,” was delivered to more than 250 senior managers at Northern Trust’s headquarters in Chicago and was video streamed to another 20 regional offices. Alumnae Siobhan S. Flynn ’93 and Kathleen Dugan ’93 both attended the event.

The speech by SOM commencement speaker Marie C. Wilson, president of The White House Project, was mentioned in several media outlets in August. The articles, appearing in the Journal Record (Oklahoma City, OK) and the Sun Herald (Biloxi, MS), cite Wilson’s urging of the graduating students to become politically active and more focused on attaining positions of power.

The August 9 issue of Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education (Paramus, NJ) featured an article on the May 6 Professional Women of Color Conference held at Simmons College on May 6. The conference, co-sponsored by Simmons School of Management and Working Mother Media, offered a venue for an unusual and open discussion of problems that professional women of color still face in the workplace. The event drew nearly 200 women from business and academics to discuss differences between white and minority women in the workplace.

Stacy Blake-Beard was interviewed for the October 3rd Sunday Boston Globe story on The Apprentice. In the article, human resource experts react to Trump’s harsh style of management. “The message of ‘The Apprentice’ is that to the extent that you look out for yourself above all else, you will be rewarded,” she said. “I think, in that sense, the show is a microcosm of the real world. Organizations talk about teamwork, but few of them promote it. They promote the star.” Stacy Blake-Beard also discussed gender and race as exhibited on The Apprentice in the CGO Commentaries series paper, “Releasing the Double Bind of Visibility for Minorities in the Workplace,” which can be found on www.simmons.edu/som/cgo.

The John Hancock Fellowship Program. The Simmons School of Management has just confirmed a partnership with John Hancock in conjunction with The Commonwealth Institute to fund three fellowships for recent SOM graduates. The funds will allow the fellows to have externships with women entrepreneurs in The Commonwealth Institute’s Women of Ethnic Diversity Initiative. The three graduates receiving the fellowships are Paula Huston, Erica Rishel, and Rocio Corona. SOM Professor Jill Kickul developed this project and will be the Faculty Advisor. The fellowships will begin this fall.

Business Plan Competition. Lois Silverman, founder and Chair of The Commonwealth Institute and a Simmons College Corporator, provided a gift to fund the awards in the SOM’s new business plan competition. Silverman is a renowned entrepreneur. She was the founder of CRA Managed Care (now Concentra Managed Care), a provider of services to reduce the costs of workers’ compensation, automobile, disability and health insurance claims. She served as Chairman of the Board of the public company and as Chief Executive Officer. She is one of the first women in Massachusetts to bring a company public. Silverman’s gift will supplement the gift provided by the Class of ’02. The business plan competition will be launched this year.

Deepening expertise in human resources management. Through the generous gift of Simmons Board of Trustees member Helen Drinan SOM ’78 and matching funds from the College’s Legacy Challenge gift fund, funds have been allocated to assist the SOM to deepen its expertise in human resources management. The funds will be used for teaching, research, and convening.
