ONLINE STUDENT DIRECTORY NOTICE
The online student directory at http://www.simmons.edu/studentdir has changed authentication methods. Currently, entering your Simmons user id and ID number as a password admits you to the directory. After Monday October 20, the password required will be your email password.

OPERATIONS UPDATE
* Bike rack has been moved across the street, please get a key from the MBA office if you want to park your bike there!
* Replacing the CR1 boards is in process, we are hoping to get them replaced with new surfaces within the month
* When you use your Sharkcard in the vending machines, it automatically does a search of the highest price item and cross checks it against your balance to make sure you have enough of money for your selection. We learned this yesterday!!
* Room available for students during the day for changing into work out clothes, if you are not feeling well, etc. is Rm 42 in the 407.

WEBCT GRADE RELEASE FORMS
The Registrar has informed us we no longer need to get a release from students to post grades to Webct because Webct requires a login and password from individual students, and the grade can only be viewed by the student and the faculty member. The College strictly adheres to the FERPA Act (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) and safeguards the unauthorized release of information.

Financial Aid Information

FINANCIAL AID UPDATES
Students are reminded that for the purposes of your financial aid, that the academic year begins with the summer term. All students, including students in the one-year track, will need to reapply for aid during the upcoming spring semester for the Summer term (which is a new academic year. Dividing your courses over 2 different academic years for the one-year track is a benefit for you financially. By borrowing over two academic years, you have increased your federal loan eligibility and reduced your necessity to seek outside loan assistance. You will be able to finance your entire summer term costs through federal programs, eliminating your need borrow through alternative loan programs, which saves you money over the term of your loan repayment. Federal educational loans currently carry the lowest interest rate ever, 2.82% while in school and 3.42% in repayment. Federal loans also have interest rates that are capped at 8.25%.

Women, Power, and Leadership in Communications: The View From the Top
Four powerful female executives will meet at Simmons College Nov. 6 to discuss why men still dominate the leadership positions in the fields of in marketing communications and public relations, even though they are primarily female professions.

Carmen Baez, Carol Cone, Andy Coville, and Maura Fitzgerald - some of the few women at the top of the communications profession — will speak on “Women, Power, and Leadership in Communications: The View From the Top,” Thursday, Nov. 6 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Simmons College third floor conference center, 300 The Fenway. Student Clubs

Student Clubs at the SOM are run by and organized by SOM students. The MBA Office Staff assists with the transition from one year to the next by gathering names of interested students and by setting up each club in WebCT. Once we put you in touch with each other, you are off and running! If you are interested in participating or learning more about any of the clubs described below, please send an email to the contact person listed. If Paula is listed as the contact person, it means that the club's student leadership is in transition.

Ethics Club
The mission of the Ethics Club is to serve as a learning resource to Simmons MBA students for a wide range of business ethics issues. The club will examine how ethical decisions impact business successes or failures. Areas of interest include sustainability, economic, social and environmental concerns; corporate accountability; ethical decision making; socially responsible investing; and social enterprise. The assumption is that ethical issues are complex business dilemmas for which better decisions can be found through ongoing discussion. Club resources can be found on the Clubs WebCT. Project Management Club
It has been said that you lead people and manage projects... while that's an ongoing OB debate, take a step toward understanding project management and share your experiences with others by participating in a student group dedicated to Project Management.

CLASS TAPES
All of the class tapes are stored in the Computer Lab. We now have a do-it-yourself method of getting copies of these tapes. Instructions are posted on how to make copies and lab assistants can help you with any questions you may have. You can bring your own tapes or copy to our used tapes free of charge. Please note that PDF files and other documents that contain graphics or are memory hungry take longer to print than your common Word document. We have also noticed that some PDF's cannot print successfully in WebCT. If you experience this issue, try emailing the PDF file to yourself and then try printing from your webmail account. Also, printing from the color ink-jet printer takes longer than the laser-jet. Please be patient and refrain from sending multiple print jobs of the same document to the printer.

SOM in the News

On October 7, 2003, Maureen Scully, CGO Faculty Affiliate, was interviewed live on WBIX 1060's morning show about gender issues in the workplace and the Center for Gender in Organizations's unique approach to gender equity and organizational change. Stacy Blake-Beard, CGO Faculty Affiliate and SOM Associate Professor, was quoted as a mentoring expert in the November 3 issue of US News & World Report in an article entitled, "The Mentor Gap: Older Women Eagerly Provide Advice, But Young Women Often Don't like What They Hear." Fiona Wilson, SOM Adjunct Assistant Professor, was also quoted in the article. Evangelina Holvino, CGO Director and Senior Research Faculty, addresses problems with diversity strategies and assumptions, and proposes some alternatives in a response to "You are the CEO: Which Diversity Intervention Strategy Will Work for Your Organization?" which was published in the fall 2003 issue of The Diversity Factor.

The Simmons School of Management was prominently featured as a leading authority on women, business, and mentoring in the November 3 issue of U.S.News & World Report. In the article “The Mentoring Gap: Older women eagerly provide advice, but young women often don’t like what they hear,” SOM professor and CGO faculty affiliate Stacy Blake-Beard is cited as a mentoring expert, and offers her views as to why a generational difference exists in women’s mentoring situations. The article also mentions the SOM/The Committee of 200 “Teen Girls on Business: Are they being empowered?” national study released earlier this year. SOM professor and study coauthor Fiona Wilson suggests businesswomen wanting their daughters to follow in their footsteps must consider the messages of the working world they impart.

SOM Dean Patricia O’Brien SOM ’77 was quoted in the September 24 issue of The Washington Post, in the article “Mastering Business Math.” O’Brien says business schools realize a GMAT score may not truly reflect one’s proficiency with numbers, and suggests refreshing math skills if you feel uncomfortable with numbers. The article also mentions the SOM/Committee of 200 collaborative Teen Girls on Business Study.

Maureen Scully, faculty affiliate for the Center for Gender in Organizations, was interviewed on WBIX 1060 AM on October 7. The topic of her interview was “Rethinking Management”, CGO’s kickoff lecture for its five-year anniversary seminar series Gender at Work: A Bold New Perspective.

Also interviewed on WBIX 1060 AM was SOM professor Susan Hass, on October 28, regarding the Bank of America purchase of Fleet Bank. Hass’s expert viewpoints on the Fleet/BNA merger also appeared in the October 29 edition of the Boston Herald.

Evangelina Holvino, CGO director and senior research faculty, appears in the Fall 2003 issue of Diversity Factor, addressing problems with diversity strategies and assumptions, and proposes some alternatives in response to “You are the CEO: Which Diversity Intervention Strategy Will Work for Your Organization?”

Joyce K. Fletcher, SOM professor and CGO faculty affiliate, was quoted in the October 27 edition of The Christian Science Monitor in the article “Standing against bias.” In the article concerning a discrimination lawsuit against Wal-Mart, Fletcher says “the notion of women not being interested in certain jobs is still quite pervasive,” and to advance women to top jobs, companies may need to examine how those jobs are defined.

SOM professor Mary Shapiro was recently quoted in the October issue of Working Mother magazine in the Practical Matters column. Shapiro gave advice on how to communicate constructive criticism at work, with finding solutions together as the goal of feedback.

Jill Kickul, SOM’s Elizabeth J. McCandless professor of entrepreneurship, recently published a paper in the November issue of International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Innovation entitled “Technological innovation in women-owned firms.”

Phyllis Rappaport SOM ’75, was featured in the article “Rappaport Foundation seeks solutions to tough problems,” in the August 29 issue of Jewish Advocate. In the article, Rappaport discusses her role as chair of the Boston-based philanthropic organization bearing her husband’s name.

Gail Snowden SOM ’78, was recently quoted in the October 3 Boston Business Journal in the article “Area nonprofits turn to branding to fill out coffers.” In the article, Snowden says nonprofits are eager to learn how they can position their organizations to effectively frame their messages.

Laura Strassman SOM ’92, vice president for product management for Audiotrieve, was featured along with her colleagues in the October 23 issue of The Boston Globe. The article describes the release of the company’s new anti-spam product InBoxer.

Paula Figoni SOM ’93 recently authored How Baking Works (John Wiley & Sons), a book that relays concisely to bakers and pastry chefs the underlying scientific concepts at work during basic baking techniques, and helps them understand a wide array of ingredients from different cultures.

Paula Huston, a current SOM student, was quoted in the article “Career changers hit the books,” appearing in the Careers supplement of the October 19 Boston Sunday Globe. In the article Huston explains her reasons for returning to the classroom after several years in the working world.

Diane Darling SOM ’00 Executive Education also appeared in the Globe’s Career supplement, quoted as a networking expert in the article “The habits of the connected.” Darling runs her own networking consultant firm and is the author of The Networking Survival Guide (McGraw-Hill, 2003).
