General Information

NOTE FROM MARY D
"Patience and perseverance have a magical effect before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish." This is my favorite quote at the end of the semester from John Quincy Adams and is so true for each and every one of you! The stress of the last few weeks will begin to disappear this weekend! You will be done for the fall term at the latest tomorrow and can now look back and reflect on what you've learned!! There is no question all of you worked very hard, particularly in the last couple of weeks. All of you have had to figure out how to manage school in the context of very busy lives, and it doesn't ever seem to matter what phase of the program you are in! We are very proud of each and every one of you and look forward to working with you all again next semester. Enjoy the time off!! Go out to dinner, have coffee with friends and family, read a book, sit on the couch and get some sleep!! Do all the things you said to yourself -"I wish I had time to..." Your break is unfortunately not all that long, but it will be a chance to rest and gear up for another semester! Best wishes to each of you for a Happy New Year and we will see you all in January!

Employer Reimbursement Forms
Employer Reimbursement Payment Agreement Forms (ERPA) are now available in the MBA Office.

Opportunity for Current Full-time Students Only
In February 2005, The Partnership and KeySpan will launch a new program, The College to Career Consortium (CCC), to develop a pipeline of leadership among the large number of students of color in the Greater Boston area. The program will prepare tomorrow’s leaders by leveraging The Partnership’s successful retention and development programs, as well as their relationships with Greater Boston’s business and social communities.

The Partnership has asked ten local colleges and universities to identify high potential students (undergraduate juniors and seniors and graduate students) of color to apply for the College to Career Consortium. As an alum of The Partnership, Suzzette Turnbull has been given the opportunity to invite a family member or friend(s)whom she thinks would benefit from the program and add value to the group of participants. The application deadline has been extended for “friends of alum” to December 25, 2005. To access and download the application and program overview, go to: http://www.thepartnershipinc.org/cms/cmsim/?Downloads

As The Partnership develops and prepares the 2005 CCC participants, they hope to expose them to the vibrant community of professionals of color that exists here in Boston.

This is an excellent opportunity to build solid relationships in the community. There is no cost to you for this program and it consists of about four to five sessions which will be held once per month.

Scholarship Application
The Ad Club provides financial assistance to full time minority college and graduate students with a strong academic record, who are interested in pursuing a career in Advertising/Marketing/Communications or a related industry. Ad Club Scholarships are awarded for $5,000 per student for tuition for the 2005/2006 academic year. Please note that Scholarship checks will only be made out to a school, not to an individual. In order to be considered for this scholarship, students must complete the entire application. For more information go to: http://www.adclub.org/scholarship.html

Course Material Update: Gender and Leadership
Due to a vendor problem, the Gender and Leadership course pack did not print properly. The bookstore has pulled those coursepacks off the shelf and the vendor is reprinting the material as we speak. Call the bookstore directly to confirm that they have arrived if you plan on making a trip over the break. Financial Aid Information

Financial Aid Updates

Is there a financial hold on your registration? If so, contact the Office of Student Financial Services. We have financial aid officers and student account representatives who can assist you with payment arrangement options so that you can register for the January term.

Already registered for the January term? Your loan funds are expected to arrive on January 13th. Classes begin on January 3rd. If your Stafford loan funds will cover your billed charges, there is no need to make an advance payment. In the even that your loan funds will not cover your billed charges, your payment is due on December 15th. We expect to mail billing statements next week. If you do not receive a bill for any reason, please contact one of our Student Account Representatives.

Want to anticipate your billed charges? It's easy! Tuition is charged at a rate of $810 per credit with an activity fee of $25 per semester. Multiply the number of credits for which you are registered by $810 and add $25. You can then refer to your award letter to determine if your charges will exceed your aid for the semester.

Getting Organized When Life Feels Out Of Control
Running late? Overbooked? Life too hectic? Can't find time to work out? For some people, organization and time management is an innate behavior. They never take on too much, their office files are clearly labeled, and old emails are easily retrievable.

Most of us, however, have trouble keeping our homes and offices in useful order. We lose important receipts, we start projects without finishing them and arrive at meetings with great ideas but with folders flying.

Many creative, enthusiastic and successful people are bogged down by the clutter and confusion that rules their lives. By exploring the root of their disorder, they can establish new habits that will lead to less chaos and less stress.

In this presentation, you will learn:
·How to uncover the habits of thought, feeling and action that are the root of one's disorder.
·The basics of organizing, from new habits and systems to the fundamentals of digging out from under.
·How to draw on your own strengths, spirit and support.
·A more rewarding way of living.
·How to develop a greater sense of inner calm and presence through the constructive management of one's outer disorder.

About the Facilitator
Marilyn Paul is a management consultant with clients that have included the New York Times, Motorola, the US Department of Transportation and the Mass Department of Social Services. As a chronically disorganized person she struggled mightily with time and stuff. She successfully discovered some new approach that she describes in It's Hard to Make a Difference When You Can't Find Your Keys: The Seven Step Path to Becoming Truly Organized (Penguin Compass, 2004). Her book received rave reviews in USAToday, Publishers Weekly, the Chicago Tribune. And was chosen as a "Book of the Year" by Spirituality and Health Magazine. She has also authored articles in numerous publications, including The Systems Thinker, Organizational Learning at Work, Working Mother, and Body and Soul.

SOM in the News

Students in the News
Congratulations to Lise Bliss and Smriti Malik who received team awards from Partners Health Care called The Partners in Excellence Award.

Dr. Deborah Kolb, the Deloitte Ellen Gabriel Professor for Women and Leadership, was the featured speaker at a book presentation and breakfast sponsored by Simmons School of Management and The Commonwealth Institute on December 15. Dr. Kolb presented her new book, Her Place at the Table: A Woman’s Guide to Negotiating Five Key Challenges to Leadership Success, co-authored by Judith Williams ’80 and Carol Frohlinger ’EE 00. Her Place at the Table identifies key challenges to a woman’s success and presents strategies to overcome them.

SOM professors Fiona Wilson, Deborah Marlino and Jill Kickul recently had their paper “Are Misalignments of Perceptions and Self-Efficacy Causing Gender Gaps in Entrepreneurial Intentions Among Our Nations’ Teens?” accepted for publication in the 2004 edition of Frontiers of Entrepreneurship Research. Jill Kickul and Norris Krueger, professor of entrepreneurship at Boise State University, also had their paper, “A Cognitive Processing Model of Entrepreneurial Self-Efficacy and Intentionality” accepted for publication in the same journal. Both papers underwent a rigorous selection process whereby only one-third of the papers presented at the previous Babson-Kauffman Research Conference in Glasgow, Scotland (June, 2004) were selected for publication in the Frontiers of Entrepreneurship Research, one of the top entrepreneurship journals.

Patricia Clarke, Assistant Professor of Finance, was a panelist at the session on “Creating a Course Curriculum to Include Global Perspectives” at the Annual Colleges of the Fenway Teaching and Learning Conference, which was held October 29 at Wheelock College.

Mary Fronk SOM ’87 has been named Director of Corporate, Foundation, and Government Relations at The Home for Little Wanderers in Boston. As Director, Fronk will oversee a large portion of grant generation support for the non-profit child and family service agency.

Sheryl Kingstone SOM ’94 was recently quoted on CMP TechWeb. Kingstone, program manager for The Yankee Group’s Customer Relationship Management Strategies division, said momentum for government adoption of CRM will grow over the next three to five years as agencies attempt to make themselves more responsive to public needs.

Kingstone was also a featured expert in the October 27 issue of American Demographics. In the article “Zero-In Heros,” Kingstone discussed demographic data and its use in finding the fine line that helps improve customer satisfaction and profitability.

Michelle Oldershaw SOM ’02 was featured in the Member Spotlight section of the September issue of New Mexico Business Weekly. Oldershaw is a marketing consultant for Pinnacle Consulting in Santa Fe, NM.
