FELLOWSHIP OF LIANZA

Ross Harvey was awarded a Fellowship of LIANZA (the Library
and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa) in 2007. The citation reads:

Ross Harvey is one of New Zealand’s most distinguished library academics, whose outstanding work as a teacher, researcher, writer and lecturer has benefited not just librarians and libraries in New Zealand but is internationally recognized and valued.

His academic career includes that of Lecturer at the New Zealand Library School, Lecturer and Senior Lecturer at Monash University (Melbourne) and Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) and as Associate Professor at Curtin University of Technology (Perth) and University of California (Los Angeles).  Ross is currently Professor of Library and Information Management at Charles Sturt University, in New South Wales.

Ross’s career is notable for the breadth and quantity of research, teaching and publication undertaken.  His research interests include: the preservation of library and archival materials, both print and digital; the history of print culture; early New Zealand and Australian newspapers and the history of music printing and publishing.  He is a prolific contributor to electronics and paper journals and has served as editor of many publications, including New Zealand Libraries.  Seminal publications by Ross include: Preservation in libraries (1993), Preservation for Australian and New Zealand libraries: principles, strategies and practices for librarians (1993) and Book and print in New Zealand: a guide to print culture in Aotearoa (1997), which he jointly edited.

Despite working overseas since 1987, Ross is a longstanding member of LIANZA and has held roles in the Wellington branch, the Publication Committee and the Cataloguing and Classification Committee.  His role as a mentor and teacher to many New Zealand and Australian librarians and the generosity with which he shares his knowledge and often challenging thinking has meant that Ross is held in high esteem in the library profession.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to research and library education throughout an academic career in both New Zealand and Australia.

Professor Ross Harvey is one of the most distinguished library academics that New Zealand has produced.  His work as a teacher, researcher, writer and speaker has benefited not just libraries and librarians in New Zealand, but is internationally recognised and valued.

Ross has been the Professor of Library and Information Management, School of Information Studies, at Charles Sturt University in New South Wales since 1999.  His teaching career has included posts at the New Zealand Library School, Monash University, Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), Curtin University of Technology (Perth) and the University of California.


Ross’s academic career is notable for the breadth and quantity of research and publishing in the areas of preservation of library and archival materials, both print and digital, history of print culture and the history of music printing and publishing.  Most notable is his book Preservation for Australian and New Zealand libraries (1993).  He has contributed to the literature regarding library education, e-learning and professional development for librarians and has been editor of many library related journals, including New Zealand Libraries.  He is sought after as a conference speaker and is a regular attendee and presenter at LIANZA conferences, having been a member of LIANZA since 1974.

The contribution that Ross Harvey has made to librarianship in New Zealand and the wider world is exceptional and long lasting.  His role as a teacher and mentor has directly benefited many people working in libraries; his research, publishing and speaking activity has provoked thinking, raised awareness, improved standards and assisted ongoing learning for professionals around the world.
