Wireless printing from your laptop

Instructions for Windows users

These instructions are intended for Simmons students, faculty, and staff who wish to print from their personally-owned Windows laptops to the GSLIS Tech Lab printers. To print from your computer to printers elsewhere on campus, see the documentation provided by Simmons Technology here.

  1. Connect to a Simmons wireless network and sign in.
  2. Click Start.
  3. If you are using XP, click Run. If you are using Vista or Windows 7, click in the empty box that says start search.
  4. Type: \\pay4print.simmons.edu
  5. A dialog box will appear asking for your username and password. At the prompt, type simmonsnt\username, replacing username with your Simmons username. Type the password you use to log in to Tech Lab computers (your network password, which may be different from your email password).
  6. A window will appear containing a list of printers. The Tech Lab printers are PAL213Printer-1, PAL213Printer-2, and PAL213Printer-3. The Cataloguing Lab printer is P214. Double click the printer you want to use.
  7. if you are prompted to install a driver, click Install driver and follow the instructions below under Installing a Windows printer driver. When you are done or if you are not prompted to install a driver, continue with the next step.
  8. After double clicking on the printer, a window may appear that says printername on pay4print.simmons.edu. The printer should now be added and available for you to print.

At the Pay4Print stations, your print jobs will appear with the username you use to log in to your computer, not your Simmons username.

Installing a Windows printer driver

A printer driver is a program that Windows uses to communicate with the printer. It acts as a 'translator' between your computer and the printer. The driver you need to install may be different for different versions of Windows and for different kinds of printers.

  1. You will first need to determine if your operating system is 32-bit or 64-bit. To do this:
    1. Click Start.
    2. Right-click on Computer.
    3. Click Properties.
    4. Beside system type, you should see either 32-bit operating system or 64-bit operating system.
  2. Based on your operating system and the printer you wish to use, click the link below to download the printer driver:

Instructions for Mac users

These instructions are intended for Simmons students, faculty, and staff who wish to print from their personally-owned Apple laptops to the GSLIS Tech Lab printers. To configure a printer for wired or wireless printing, you must connect your computer directly to the Simmons college network using an ethernet cable. After you have configured the printer, you may print using either the wireless or wired network.

  1. Using an ethernet cable, connect your computer to the Simmons College network.
  2. Click the Apple icon in the upper left corner of the screen.
  3. Click System Preferences.
  4. Select the Print & Fax preference panel.
  5. If the panel is locked, click the lock icon to unlock it and enter your credentials.
  6. Under the list of printers on the left, click the + button.
  7. In the window that opens, select the IP icon.
  8. Using the Protocol dropdown, be sure Line Printer Daemon - LPD is selected.
  9. In the Address text box, type Pay4print.simmons.edu.
  10. In the Queue text box, type the name of the printer you want to use. The Tech Lab printers are:
    • PAL213printer-1
    • PAL213printer-2
    • PAL213printer-3
    • PAL214
    Pay careful attention to capitalization - the first three letters must be capitalized but the rest must be lowercase.
  11. In the Name text box, enter the name you will use for this printer (this is how the printer will appear in your list of printers).
  12. Under the Print Using dropdown, choose Select a driver to use...
  13. Select the printer driver that corresponds to the printer you chose according to the following table:

  14. Click Add. In the options window that appears, check Duplex Unit. Click Continue.
  15. You have now added the printer to your computer and it should be available for you to print.

At the Pay4Print stations, your print jobs will appear with the username you use to log in to your computer, not your Simmons username.
