MARC Fields Labeled

..... scan of MARC record with fields labeled

This figure takes the figure in which tags, indicators, subfield codes, etc., are identified, and substitutes labels for the contents of the fields. Comparing the two records side by side allows one to view the label for a field and see sample contents for that field at the same time. For example, the 245 field above is labeled "Title proper $h [general material designator] / $c Statement of responsibility." The contents of that field in the previous example are: "Tales of terror and mystery $h [computer file] / $c by Arthur Conan Doyle." That is, "Tales of terror and mystery" is the title proper, "[computer file]" is the general material designator, and "by Arthur Conan Doyle" is the statement of responsibility.
