Welcome! My name is Benjamin Kalish. I am a student studying library science at Simmons GSLIS West in South Hadley Massachusetts.
This page collects various projects of mine which have found their way online. To be honest, its primary purpose is only to replace Apache's autogenerated index with something more friendly.
A Pathfinder of Contra Dance Music at Forbes Library
Originally created for a school project, but now also available on the Forbes Library website, this is a guide both to resources in the library's collection and to resources available freely on the web.
The Real Reason for the Obscurity of the Cutter Expansive Classification System
An exploration of Charles Ammi Cutter's famous shelf classification. I realize that this paper, written for an introduction to cataloging course, barely scratches the surface. I hope to explore this subject further in the future.
A Pioneer Valley Tune Book
Still very much a work in project, this "tune book" only includes four tunes so far! Tunes are nicely typeset and can be viewed as images online or downloaded as PDFs for printing. Producing these pages has not only been a musical exercise, but also a programing challenge. All the files are produced automatically using a Perl script which calls upon Lilypond, Image Magick and other command line tools.
