Students Working on the Project
Drawing on the historical significance of playing card art referencing cultural and political events of the day, the Open Studio students have created updated “faces” within a contemporary and personalized context. Pop culture figures are represented, as are political figures, cultural icons, current literary characters, and mythological beings.
Additionally presented are smaller framed cards selected from a larger pack of cards that the Open Studio students designed for this project. The overarching theme for this deck is mythology, and each suit represents the myths of a different culture. Each student developed the idea for his or her own deck of cards, extensively researching the entities and images that are portrayed.
Reproductions from this pack of playing cards are on sale in the Currier Museum Shop to benefit the Currier Art Center Open Studio Program. The Open Studio Project at the Currier Center in Manchester NH involves creative high school students in an on-going studio setting. Each semester under the guidance of a visiting artist and program coordinator, Linn Krikorian the students devote several afternoons a week to their art. The projects culminate in an exhibit of student and the artists’ work.
