I advocate Women's Studies Majors like it's my job because... one day it will be! I, like many misguided souls, once that that Women's Studies was not a "serious" major. What do they study anyway? How can they get a job? But then...since I wasn't sure about my major, and I love to take classes from all different departments and disciplines, I found that just by choosing the classes from the course book based on what sounded like the most fun, without thinking about my future major, (surprise!)I was halfway to a Women's Studies Major anyway. All based on what types of subjects I like to study, and I discovered that not only had I taken tons of classes that fell under my major, but those were the most mind-expanding, life-changing, intense classes that I had taken. AAAANNNNNNNNDDDDD...there are very few classes that are actually "Women's Studies". Mostly, I take classes that are under different departments but relate to this subject called "Women's Studies" So I get to take English, Sociology, Political Science-the list goes on forever! The Women's Studies department at Simmons is populated by some of the best professors anyone could hope to have, such as Diane Raymond, Mary Jane Treacy, and Jyoti Puri. I've never heard of a better Women's Studies department.
