I came to the faculty of Simmons College Graduate School of Social Work in 1985, after working in child mental health and community mental health settings for a number of years and earning a doctorate at Boston College. Depending on the semester and year I teach MSW courses in social work research and evaluation, professional development, groups, and dynamics of racism and oppression as well as research methods courses, a dissertation seminar and dissertation advising at the doctoral level. Since 2007 I have served as director of the Doctoral Program.
In the Spring of 2005 I engaged in a seven week sabbatical experience in Israel (funded by the Whiting Foundation) in which I was the guest of Tel Aviv University and conducted a research study (funded in part by the Simmons Fund for Research). The study "Conversations Across Difference: Lessons from Israeli Social Work Faculty and Practitioners" included in-depth interviews with 12 social work faculty and a focus group of nine social work practitioners to better understand how in the classroom and/or in practice they explore, learn about, and address racism and diversity between Arabs and Jews and also within the Jewish community.
As a result of my agency visits in Haifa, I was invited to be a member of the Social Services Committee of the Boston-Haifa Connection which is a major international professional collaboration sponsored by Combined Jewish Philanthropies. I now meet regularly (in person and by teleconferencing) with social service leaders in Boston and Haifa to address problems and programs related to children and families at risk. Within this role I participate in meetings in Boston and in Haifa yearly. We are continuing to develop collaborative projects and specifically working to broaden project participation to include faculty from the University of Haifa, NGOs and representatives from the business community. In addition, I am working collaboratively with Dr, Donald Wertlieb at Tufts to facilitate evaluation initiatives as well as to facilitate in-service staff training on resiliency at the Parent-Child Center, Beit Maya, in Haifa. In January 2007, Donald Wertlieb, professor and director of the Tufts University Center for Children and I received a grant from CJP to provide four days of training to Haifa municipality social workers on practice methods with children at risk. We were joined by SSW Assistant Professor, Lynne Sanford and SSW doctoral student and adjunct faculty member Phil Decter '96SW.
My current research interests are in practice evaluation and evidence-based practice, child mental health, ethical issues in practice, international social work, multicultural practice, and professional development. Recent publications and presentations have been in these areas and reflect my commitment to making research and evaluation relevant to practitioners and to developing practice informed evidence for what social workers do and how they do it.
