Since my practice days in a family counseling social work agency and a psychiatric clinic for children and families, my interests have been prevention and treatment of mental health problems. For the past 28 years I have been fortunate enough to study a group of community youngsters and watch their progress in developing over this period. Also fortunate was the continued financial support of the National Institute of Mental Health during this period.
My study group, now in their 30's, have embarked on a variety of careers and have children of their own. A graduate of our Ph.D. program and Ph.D. students have conducted important special studies with our study group. Occasionally MSW students have had summer research positions. About 60 articles have been published from the study and a listing is posted on the SLS website: www.simmons.edu/ssw/sls. A representative publication appeared in the December 2003 issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry. It is entitled Childhood and Adolescent Predictors of Major Depression in the Transition to Adulthood.
Social work research is now coming into an important phase of development linked to the progress of the profession. A national center for social work research is being considered for the near future with the mission of improving the effectiveness of social work services. The Society for Social Work Research, along with NASW, recognize the contribution of research to social work.
As a teacher I constantly learned from my students and saw the teaching relationship as mutual collaboration. Simmons provides an excellent environment for learning and teaching as all students are valued for their unique contribution to the class setting and ultimately the profession.
