Teaching new social workers in the best job I have ever had! For twenty years, my clinical practice has been with involuntary clients, mostly youth in residential treatment or lock-up who have committed crimes against people. I worked with adolescent victims of violence for ten years before that. Although I remain active in clinical practice, supervision and agency consultation, by far, my greatest joy is being a small part of convincing social workers that we can still be of use even if a person has absolutely no interest in working with us. Many of you have already worked with involuntary clients. Perhaps you are considering graduate school to gain skills and insights to further your work in with folks who can not live in their communities. I’ve taught at two other local graduate schools of social work and I can tell you, Simmons College is the right place for you.
In addition to Human Behavior in the Social Environment, I teach Child and Adolescent Trauma; Group Therapy; and Forensic Social Work. Attachment and Object Relations Theories are the foundation of my practice and teaching. I’ve published three books on trauma and one on women and self-esteem. Simmons offers numerous placements in alternative schools, Court Clinics, residential treatment centers, jails and prisons. Join us for the academic training to that informs social work with the most deserving and rewarding clients.
