LIS 415 - Description and Outcomes
Title
Information Orgnization. 3 semester hours.
Content
The phenomena, activities, and issues surrounding the organization of information in service of users and user communities. Topics include resource types and formats, information service institutions, markup, descriptive metadata, content standards, subject analysis and classification, and the information life cycle. Readings, discussions, examinations, and oral and written exercises.
Relevant learning outcomes
The GLSIS faculty have identified ten student learning outcomes, and each course addresses one or more of these.
- students demonstrate the ability to apply standards relevant to specific activities.
- students have the ability to analyze, synthesize, and communicate information in a variety of formats.
- students can assess and evaluate systems for managing content.

By the end of the course, the student
- uses the standard tools of cataloguing, classification, and indexing at a basic level of proficiency
- can identify the components of an information discovery service
- uses the vocabulary of the field appropriately
- can help a user use an information discovery system effectively
- demonstrates knowledge of core concepts and principles
