Middle-earth Gateways
(I wish)

I first read LOTR in 1959, when I was 11, then three or four times a year for the next five or six years, and at least once a year after that. This book has shaped my being. And yes, I like the movies, all things considered. Check out this large collage of my office. I have catalogued all of my Tolkien books in LibraryThing.

The Chronological Tolkien Page
Tell the calculator which editions you have of various things (not including the History), and get a chapter-by-chapter reading plan. Bless you, Space Monkey.
Council of Elrond
News, chat, galleries, fan fiction, film transcripts, great family trees, fonts, etc.
The Encyclopedia of Arda
A massive reference source for the history, geography, etc. of Arda. Also available as a desktop tool.
The Lord of the Rings.com
Includes essays, news, message boards, and a big section of well-annotated links to other sites. Emphasis on the books.
Lord of the Rings Fanatics Network
Extensive and well organized collection in the link directory, and some fine content in the library, including (in process) genealogies and up-close images of some of the books glimpsed in the movies.
TheOneRing.net
Regarded as the best site for movie news, and the one which got Peter Jackson's ear early on.
The Order to Read Tolkien's Books
By library consultant David Bratman. Including the History (so you could file that in with the results of the chronological calculation from the site listed above).
Planet Tolkien
Well organized, easy on the eye, UK-based. Tolkien generally, with no special emphasis on the movies. Includes The Guide - an attempt to create a complete glossary of Tolkien's works.
Tolkien
The dedicated HarperCollins site (which is really hard to find from the main HarperCollins pages).
The Tolkien Society
Founded in 1969 - a scholarly (which does not imply humourless) society. I am a member.

Humour

Bag End to the Cracks of Doom
MapQuest directions by Andrew Arensburger.
Straight Dope Message Board - If LOTR Had Been Written By Someone Else?
Actually, many hundreds of someone elses. This is a hoot, and it has some extremely clever material and some trash. ROTFL.
The Very Secret Diaries
By Cassandra Claire, who has ceased this activity, alas.
