This site is interesting for the Canadian perspective. The National Library of Canada, for example, has its own set of rule interpretations for AACR2, just as the Library of Congress has its published set of Rule Interpretations. Both are available in electronic format through Cataloger's Desktop. This site provides very basic rules and interpretations for situations catalogers encounter on a daily basis. For those wanting a flavor of what it is to be a cataloger, this is a good site to visit.

Cataloging includes not only description but classification. One scheme used, especially by academic and research libraries, is the Library of Congress Classification system. This website provides the outline, which can be accessed through hyperlinks. Classification web can had through subscription; it provides the complete text of the schedules, which are used by subject catalogers for application in the bibliographic record. Collocation is supported through the use of the LC Classification system.

CIP Record Creation

An interesting area of cataloging in recent years is the Cataloging in Publication Program, frequently referred to simply as CIP. A CIP record is created when a publisher submits a work to be cataloged prior to publication. From this submission, a Library of Congress cataloger creates an initial bibliographic record that can be included with the published item, normally on the verso of the title page. This is a valuable service for libraries with limited resources. This website provides the purpose, process and scope of the CIP program as well as addresses frequently asked questions.
