- Journals
- ARIADNE
Published by
UKOLN, based at the University of Bath, UK
The journal is
published online quarterly and the articles are accessible without cost. Its
target group is primarily academic information science professionals in the
UK, but there are many articles of interest for all people following
information networking and service developments. Articles can be retrieved
by journal issue date and a key word search page is provided. It is
important to read the search tips provided and, one caution, the search
engine is rather slow.
- Computers in Libraries
Published by
Information Today, Inc.
For those professonals in the library field, this monthly serial is useful to keep up with the computer industry as it relates to special, school, public and academic libraries. It is subscriber based although the magazine's table of contents and some of the articles can be viewed in full without cost. It is part of Information Today, Inc. Advertisements appear on the site.
- D-Lib Magazine
Produced by the
Corporation for National Research Initiatives and funded by a grant from the
National Science Foundation.
This electronic journal concerns
itself with digital research in the library setting. Published eleven times
a year and posted at a number of different sites, it is searchable by title,
author and keyword and includes articles, conference reports and calls for
participation as well reminders of deadlines. The weakness of this site is
its large amount of very short articles and the focus on libraries may not
appeal to some researchers.
- First Monday
Edited by
Edward J. Valuashas, et al.
This is a peer reviewed journal
supported by the Library at the University of Illinois at Chicago. It has
published over 100 issues with articles written by authors all over the
world focusing on the Internet. Current and past issues are free at its
website and easily searchable. It is only published electronically.
- Information Today
Sponsored by Ebsco
An online subscriber based newspaper
that describes the events and trends in the information industry. It appeals
to a wide audience and some of the articles can be accessed free however
most of the articles are only available with subscription. It is published by the same company as is Computers in Libraries.
- Articles and Books
- After the
Dot-Bomb: Getting Web Information Retrieval Right This Time
by
Marcia Bates
This article aimed at information professionals in
the library setting identifies problems in the web information retrieval
realm. Published in First Monday in July 2002, it continues to be useful
especially in the area of classification and indexing vocabularies. However, while important issues are thoroughly discussed, solutions, although identified, are covered in a more cursory fashion.
- The Anatomy of a Large-Scale Hypertextual Web Search Engine
by Sergey Brin and Lawrence Page
This very interesting and detailed article describes the development of the Google search engine prototype. The
article contains helpful links and the references cited are useful. One of the links did not work. This technical paper was presented in 1998 but is still valuable for identification of challenges in search engine design.
- Information
Retrieval
by C.J. van Rijsbergen B.Sc., Dip. NAAC, Ph.D.,
M.B.C.S., F.I.E.E., C.Eng., F.R.S.E.
The second edition of this
book was published in 1979. It is a good basic detailed text
describing information retrieval methods and concepts targeting. university
and postgraduate students as well as researchers. It is available in full
online at no cost. Its main drawback is, of course, its age having been
published before the use of the internet became popular, however, the book
is valuable and will appeal to the serious student.
- Organizations
- American Society for Information Science
and Technology
Produced by asis&t
Asis&t is
one of the oldest and most respected societies for information
professionals. It focuses on cooperation between the many diverse aspects of
information science and technology with an emphasis on dissemination of
information and encouragement of creative ideas and perspectives. The site not
only provides a detailed description of the organization but allows access
to current and past articles. The site contains a great deal of information, much of it accessible by drop down menus and lists, therefore it takes some time to navigate.
- Center for Intelligent Information
Retrieval
Maintained by Department of Computer Science,
University of Massachusetts, Amherst
The center is a research lab
involved with the development of algorithms and tools for information
retrieval including systemic architecture and design issues with an emphasis
on long term research. The site provides access to a number of full text
publications retrievable by searching year of publication or by keyword
search. Also available are some dissertations and conference proceedings
publications. Some items must be obtained by email request.
- Information Retrieval at the
Illinois Institute of Technology
Produced by the Illinois
Institute of Technology, Department of Computer Science
This
research group sponsored by the National Science Foundation as well as a
number of private companies, including AOL, has developed several
information processing systems to help users find and process relevant
information on the internet. The site provides access to papers and
information about the groups information retrieval projects. This very
simply designed website allows retrieval of papers by publication year and
keyword searching but is very stingy on providing search tips or
instructions to assist the user.
- The Retrieval Group
Provided by National Institute of Standards and Technology,
Information Access Division
IAD, a part of NIST, a U.S.
commerce Department Technology Administration agency, provides standards
concerned with access to complex information. The Retrieval Group works with
various private, academic and other governmental agencies to encourage and
create useful information retrieval and manipulation techniques. The site
provides links to lists of papers and presentations as well as some full
text documents and slide presentations. At times, some of the links may not
work.
- Special Interest Group on Information
Retrieval
Produced by Association for Computing Machinery
This ACM group sponsors conferences and workshops. A wide variety of
information retrieval issues are addressed. Much of the information provided
can be accessed only by members of the organization; however, there is a good
resources page.
- Resource Collections
- Indexing
Resources on the WWW, Information Retrieval
by Mary Sue
Stephenson, PhD
Dr. Stephenson has provided this excellent
alphabetically arranged list of information retrieval articles,
organizations and bibliographies for her students at the School of Library,
Archival and Information Studies at the University of British Columbia. Its
strength is the provision of links to a variety of very good articles and
other resources. Its weakness is its lack of description and in some cases,
no identification of author. Additionally, some of the links do not work.
- Resources
on Information Systems
by Rong Tang, PhD
Although Dr.
Tang designed this resource collection for students at the Catholic
University School of Library and Information Science Information Systems
class, it contains very useful and relevant links to information retrieval journals and
organziations. An added bonus is the provision of excellent links to online
glossaries. The researcher must keep in mind that this site has been developed
for LIS students and focuses on library systems but is well worth visiting.
- SearchTools.com
Edited
by Avi Rappoport
A free guide maintained by Search Tools
Consulting, a search engine development consulting firm has information, news and
advice about the technology of web site searching. There are product reviews
as well as good links to general site searching information and other
related topics. One caveat, take into account that SearchTools.com and
Search Tools Consulting appear to be solely controlled by Avi Rappoport. It
is only published electronically.
- Web IR & IE
by Einat
Amitay
This is a nice collection of online resources for those
interested in not only learning some basics but also for persons interested
in the latest developments in the area of Web information retrieval and
extraction. The design of the site is simple and easy to use. However, it is
not readily clear from the website what sort of organization "webir" is and
how the creator(s) determine the criteria on which the resources are
selected.
