Digital Library:
- Digital v. Electronic v. Virtual Libraries
Roy Tennant, former manager of the The escholarship Web & Services Design with Berkeley Digital Library SunSITE provides information regarding the wording differences of three similar, yet distinct
types of libraries. The site gives good definitions and examples of characteristics of each library. The author, in good humor, chatises the reader, assuming they have very limited knowledge on these topics.
- What is a Digital Library? Definition, Content and Issues
Professor Stephen P. Harter, School of Library and Information Science at Indiana University presented this paper at the
International Conference on Digital Libraries and Information Services for the 21st Century in Seoul, Korea, 1996. In the paper he shares characteristics of a digital library,
to those of a traditional library and problems digital libraries may encounter. Offers questions libraries need to ask themselves as they build digital libraries.
- What are Digital Libraries
The Digital Library Federation (DLF) and their members crafted and agreed upon their definition of what are digital libraries. Agreeing on a common definition,
allows the DLF to meet its goals and manage its members better. The option to review their definition and revise it is always available.

Documents, dissertations, research project information and more is accessible on this site.
- University of California at Berkley Digital Library Research Project
The Digital Library Project is creating and designing tools and technologies to help better models of the "scholarly information life cycle."
The focus of this research is to manage the change from the current centralized, discrete publishing model, to a distributed, on-going, and self-publishing model,
while keeping the most important parts of the most recent model reviewed by peers. This site offers research information, along individual informations on those
participating on this project.
- University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Digital Library Research Project
Grainger Engineering Information Library Center is currently involved in ten research projects. Some of which are
Open Archive Initiative Metadata in Science and Engineering, Illinois Open Archives Initiative Metadata Harvesting Project, IMLS Digital Collections and Content and Proposed XML Schemas for Dublin Core Metadata.
This research in geared toward the engineering fields.
- University of Michigan Digital Library Research Project
This research is geared toward building
an infrastructure that allows users (and publishers) to have the feel of working within a library,
where the main concern is offering service and information organized in a traditional way, when the information and services
are actually in constant change, with an uncentralized administration. It also includes building an interface to support this infrastructure.
This is a challenging research project, helping digitial libraries to be organized within themselves.
- Digital Collections:
- ACM Digital Library
The ACM Digital Library is a broad collection of multiple citations, full text articles, newsletter articles and
proceedings from conferences published in ACM journals. They offer personalized services for users. You can also set up your own personal bibliography page, using the ACM resources
