- The Association of Research Libraries
This website provides basic elements for defining digital libraries. It also indicated the purposes
of digital libraries. The site is a good starting point to learn the basic definitions and background of digital libraries. However, it
is more of an introduction to the topic.
- Digital Libraries and the Changing World of Education
This article by Hans Roes discusses the impact of digital libraries on education. It is an excellent article to
demonstrate that changes in the educational system will lead to new types of learning, with digital libraries as a necessary component.
The article is written well and is easy to understand.
- A Survey of Digital Library Education
This is a paper by Tefko Saravevic and Marija Dalbello (Rutgers University) from the Proceesings of the American
Society for Information Science and Technology, (2001), vol. 38, pp. 209-223. The paper presents
results from a survey on the current state of digital library education in academic institutions. The paper is interesting because it also examines
the rationale for digital library education, and provides suggested teaching models.
- CBE: Basic Education Online Edition (September 2000), vol. 45, no. 1
This article, written by M. Rene Islas, discusses the role of digital libraries in revitalizing schools. Although the article is useful for academic
institutions, its focus is on the California school system. The article is clear, but is very short.

This website provides links to a variety of digital libraries, listed by subject. It demonstrates
the usefulness of linking to find resources and information.

- A Brief History of Human Computer Interaction Technology
This article provides a summary on the historical development and major breakthroughs in human-computer interaction. The article
focuses on the significat role of university research.
- Key Concepts in the Architecture of the Digital Library
This paper by Kahn and Wilensky provides eight key issues in the devlopment of digital libraries. The paper is presented very well, and includes
illustrations and diagrams for explanation.
- Digital Libraries Initiative Phase One
In Phase One of the Digital Libraries Initiatives, which ran from 1994-1998, the government focuses on advancing the collection,
storage, and organization of digital information. This report provides a good background on the development of digital libraries and the
government's role in its advancement. The site also provides useful links developed from Phase One of the Intitiative.

In Phase Two of the Digital Libraries Initiative, the government utilizes a multiagency approach to
reasearching the development of future digital libraries. The report outlines the goals of advancing globally distributed, networed information
resources. It encourages communities to docus on innovative applications.

In this article by David Levy, the author analogizes the intial struggle of public libraries to the current struggle
of digital libraries. The article provides an interesting perspective on the history of digital libraries and digital librarian roles.

This article discusses both the theoretical and practical reasons for a variety of indexes
within a large digital library. The article is useful for demonstrating how indexes are connected to the Z39.50 protocol.

objects, metadata, and projects. The article also provides definitions and supporting resources. The articles strengths include its well-organized structure
and various links to other resources.

This website is an online digital archive designed to provide access to a variety of materials such as manuscripts, photographs, and
works of art. The site focuses on access to materials in California libraries, museums, and other instutitions across the state.

- A Framework for Building Open Digital Libraries
This article provides the principles for building digital libraries with open architecture. It is more concerned with
existing interoperability standards and technology, however, and fails to provide much information on actual collection development.
- Planning Digital Projects for Historical Collections
This guide, provided by the New York Public Library, discusses issues to consider when planning a digital project.
The guide includes topics such as: reasons for commencing a digital library project; what the project may involve; and how to select
appropriate materials for the project.
- Digital Conversion of Research Library Materials
This paper presents a strategy for selecting research materials, and defining technical requirements for conversion of
such materials to digital impage form. The article argues that significant economic, access, and preservation reasons call for a definition of conversion
requirements to ensure the building of a digital collection.

This article provides an outline of approaches for archiving digital records. The article suggest that the specific approaches
will help to preserve the integrity and accessibility of the resources.

collection developmen and also discusses supporting resources.
- A Digital Strategy for the Library of Congress
This committee report examines the advances in digital librarianship on the Library of Congress. The report includes various recommendations
on the development of digital collections, as well as the evolution of metadata.
- The California Digital Library
This website is home to the Clafornia Digital Library collection. The collection states that it is one of the largest
digital library collections in the world. The library provides access to materials and databases, and is user friendly and well organized. However, the collection is
limited to California resources, and this could be either a strength or weakness.
- The International Children's Library
This website provides access to a variety of children's books. The site is very attractive and has many illustrations and tools for children.
One major strength is that it is a global resource--with many books offered in different languages. Although its focus on children is a strength, there are no books for
children under the age of 6. The library also has limited searching capabilities.
- The LC American Memory Program
This website provides acces to the Library of Congress' "American Memory Collection." The site is well organized and easy
to use, and it offers 7 million digital items. However, the collection's resources are limited to those relating to the history and culture
of the United States. This limitation could be either a strength or weakness, depending on what materials are needed.
