LCIS 101-02                           due 11/16/05 same bat time, same bat station

Actors portray characters. They use combinations of costume, mannerisms, and voice to connote particular aspects of a character. If they are successful, these characteristics will resonate with their audience’s beliefs so that the audience members recognize this character. We will look at several movies where the representation of race, class and gender are central themes of the film and we will look at how actors portray characters and, in some cases, how the fictional characters tries to portray a different kind of character (e.g. a poor kid acting like a rich kid, a gay man trying to “act straight”, an African American woman trying to act like a Mexican man)

Each of you will be in a group of 3 people and will watch a movie (we have a list of suggestions but if there’s another movie not on our list that you think is appropriate, let us know). You will present your discussion of the treatment of race, class and/or gender to the class and you will use clips from the movie to back up your points. Although it will be tempting, try very hard not to digress into other aspects of the movie (like the love story in Nell)

We will hear your presentations on two Wednesdays: November 16 and November 30, 2005.
