On this site you will find a bit of information about me and my work in information organization, a core area of library and information science.

I am a professor at Simmons University's School of Library and Information Science (SLIS). Before arriving in Boston, I received my MLIS and Ph.D. at the University of Pittsburgh's School of Information Sciences (now the School of Computing and Information).

Before moving to the woods in the middle of the state, I lived in Cambridge, Mass., Pittsburgh, Pa., San Francisco, Calif., Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Ga., rural Kentucky, and a few other places. I am originally from Maryland, south of D.C.

I am the author of two widely used textbooks in the LIS field, The Organization of Information and Introduction to Cataloging and Classfication.

In 2026, I won an award from ALA: The Margaret Mann Citation.
