National Endowment for the Humanities

During 1983-1985, the Humanity in Libraries Program of the National Endowment for the Humanities supported Dr. Chen's internationally known PROJECT EMPEROR- I: China's Treasure Revealed via Videodisc Technology with a planning grant in 1983, a major project grant in 19845 and with another supplemental grant in 1985.

This project started as an interactive videodisc project in 1983. A set of 2 double-sided videodiscs were produced in 1984, and since then, a number of award winning multimedia products have been produced. These include the Cindy Award (Association for Visual Communicators) interactive videodisc, The First Emperor of China, published by The Voyager Company in 1991, and the multimedia CD-ROM with the same title. This CD-ROM was selected by MacUser (October 1994) as one of the 50- Best CD-ROMs in 1994.

Since 1985, PROJECT EMPEROR-I has been featured in many high- tech, library and non-library publications and journals, including Academic Computing, Chronical of Higher Education, American Libraries, Multimedia Selection, and Multimedia Today. It has been presented at over three dozen international in over two dozen countries and major national conferences, as well as many media coverages in newspapers, radio and TVs.
