Museum of Fine Arts Murals

Sargent worked on this collection of murals for the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston from November 1916 to March 1925. The original commission was for a much smaller project, but Sargent developed it into 20 paintings and 18 bas reliefs. The murals decorate the ceiling of the Shapiro rotunda, the ceiling of the Shapiro Colonnade side aisles, and the entrance of the Museums' former library. The pieces depict figures and myths of Greek mythology, with several focusing on the arts. Sargent died before installation was completed. The museum postponed the unveiling ceremony for several months to prepare a memorial exhibition. The completed murals were shown to the public in November 1925.
