Assignments    Project    Grading

I. ASSIGNMENTS: (20%)

Assignments Content Percent
1 Wiki Reading Journal 10%
2 LIS Key Articles Lead Discussion 10%

II. RESEARCH PROJECT: (80%)

Throughout the semester, you will develop, conduct, and complete a concrete research project. The project will entail seven milestone segments: (1) research scenario; (2) reflective inquiry (problem statement, research questions, hypotheses and variables); (3) literature review; (4) research protocol (design, sampling procedure, data collection instruments); (5) data collection; (6) data analysis and results; and (7) final research paper. For due dates of each of the segment, check the class schedule page.

  1. Research Scenario (5%)

Describe a researchable idea or topic of interest by outlining the setting of the research and your initial thoughts or plans for investigation.  Present the significance of the topic and suggest the implication of your research results.

   2. Reflective Inquiry: Statement of Problem, Research Questions, Hypotheses, and Variables (10%)

For this segment, compose your statement of problem. Also articulate specific research questions relevant to your project. When appropriate, state your hypotheses and describe the independent variables and dependent variables in the study.

    3. Literature Review (15%)

For this segment, you will gather literature relevant to your research topic and perform a literature review for your project. In composing the literature review, bear in mind the principles and styles of literature review that you have learned from the readings.

   4. Research Protocol (15%)

For this segment, you will describe the method/empirical approach that you plan to use for your project. You will further specify the research design, the procedure of sampling and conducting the research,  and include the study instruments (questionnaire, interview script, observation protocol, testing instrument, etc.). If your research involves human participants, you will need to complete an IRB application (which requires you to specify research design and data collection instruments) as a part of the segment.

   5. Data Collection (10%)

For this segment, you will perform a small scale data collection. If your project is designed for a large scale study, you will use the data collection as collecting data for the pilot study. The written piece for this segment is a description of the dates and times the research sessions take place to collect data.

   6. Data Analysis and Results (10%)

For this segment, you will perform data analysis and report the results. The results can be preliminary. You may work with me to explore more in-depth statistical analysis methods for your data.

   7. Final Research Paper (15%)

The final paper is where you put all six previous segments together and compose a research paper that reports the project that you have conducted throughout the semester.
