Studio 5 COMM-390

Studio 5 is a renowned faculty-facilitated, professional communications studio: students doing real work for real clients. This capstone course in Simmons College’s Communications Department, gives soon-to-graduate students the advantage of hands-on experience before they begin their professional careers.

Students work in collaborative teams to undertake a number of projects for non-profit organizations in the Boston metropolitan area. These may require them to analyze client communications’ needs, identify an appropriate strategy for a budget and on a deadline, and create professional-quality solutions to meet client needs.

CommTracks

In 2006, four students asked to participate in a joint independent project to develop and produce a magazine that highlighted the members of the graduating class, as well as department-related activities. The end result was COMMTRACKS, a magazine so enthusiastically received—not only among our students and faculty, but the college, too—that people encouraged us to turn it into an annual project.

For the last six years, anywhere from five to seven seniors have come forward to create the concept and do 100 percent of the design, layout, photography, graphics, and art, and some 90-plus percent of the writing and editing. They also work—without faculty assistance—closely with the printer, choosing the paper and handling the proofs.

Bon Jovi Photo Essay

Ten students from the Simmons College Department of Communications were recently invited to learn the production process of a major concert. Mike Savas, member of Bon Jovi’s production team, invited the students to tour, participate in backstage interviews, and enjoy the concert as Bon Jovi’s guests.
