Coach/Team Relations

The head crew coach, Nikolay Kurmakov, has a thick Ukrainian accent. His English is not perfect, so he always has a way of phrasing things that, even when he doesn't mean them to be that way, come out sounding pretty humorous. Despite this, Nik has a very serious manner. He means business. When he yells out rrrrrROW!, you had better row as if your life depended on it! When Nik first introduced himself to us, he told us a little bit about his history as a rower. He was on the Ukrainian national rowing team, and had been rowing since he was 15! I think all of us were, and still are, a little bit in awe of him. He is tall, and incredibly strong, which in effect motivates us to be as strong as we can be. As serious as he is, he has the sense of humor and patience to put up with a bunch of women rowers! Diana is the novice team's coach. As experienced a rower and coach as he is, Diana helps to balance out Nik's gruffness, and we think of her more as our friend. Diana and Nik help to motivate us, and most importantly, push us, and in return we want to show them how good we can be.
